Initial Analysis & Audit of Your Current Platform
If you have an existing website or custom built content management system, we’ll first perform a comprehensive audit of your site (or system) to see how well your current site performs in regards to general and custom functionality, usability/user experience, visual aesthetics, site security, and ADA, WCAG, 508 compliancy (if required).
Our Recommendations Based on Analysis
For many small businesses, WordPress is an economical and easy-to-use website platform and will remain a good fit into the future due to its wide adoption rate and the vast community support behind its contributed plugins. Unlike other CMS platforms, WordPress is one of the easiest to use for site administrators and content contributors without requiring knowledge of coding. In general, if a person is comfortable using social media and MS Word to create and publish content, then publishing within WordPress will be almost as easy.
Drupal is our preferred platform for highly customized websites, complex data handling, and for enterprise systems such as those used in government and by large corporations.
Other projects may require a hybrid system or one that is built totally from scratch depending on the requirements. In cases such as these we work with you each step of the way to ensure we have your requirements completely identified and understood before diving into any custom development.
Content, Navigation, & Events Restructuring
During our “Discovery & Planning” phase, we’ll evaluate your website’s content structure, navigation menus, and other interactive features to determine ways in which these items may be consolidated, simplified, and reorganized to deliver users the content they seek in easier ways, while reducing the number of clicks and steps it takes for them to find what they need. This includes the RFP request to make the Events section easier to navigate and use, as well as other sections of content that may need to be revised along the way.
Backend Interface
For your content publishing and administrative needs (“backend interface”), we will be sure to use common plugins and administration tools that are widely adopted and provide the easiest and most intuitive methods to add, edit, and/or delete your site’s content. If your organization requires, we can create hierarchical user roles with varying levels of publishing permissions. This is useful if you have multiple content contributors that require different levels of access and publishing approval before their content goes live. A content approval / moderation queue with user messaging and notifications may be beneficial to your organization, depending on the size of your content contributing team.
Analytics & User Metrics
User Analytics are also important to determine the level of success and amount of interaction your visitors are having with your website. We have integrated Google Analytics and other user metrics software for many of our clients and can provide you with easy-to-read tables and charts that display your site’s traffic data, page stats, download counts (“downloads of resources”), and more. Using the right combination of plugins and configurations, we can reduce (and in some cases eliminate) the need to login to multiple external Google accounts such as Google Analytics and Google Search Console (formerly Google Webmaster Tools) in order to see how well your site is performing overall.
Contact Forms
Your website’s Contact Form submissions, can be easily configured so that the forms send to multiple email accounts. If required, we can set up a rules-based notification process for select website forms if variables or conditional submission scenarios are required.
Video Embedding, Hosting, & Streaming
Video hosting providers such as YouTube and Vimeo are great options because you can use their storage space and optimized streaming to deliver your videos to your site without maximizing your site’s server space and resources, as video files can be quite large depending on resolution and runtime. YouTube provides a great option for videos that are public, but if you need secure streaming that is private to only your website, then Vimeo is the better solution. We can integrate either Vimeo or YouTube streaming into your website in a way that allows simple but flexible copy/paste embedding options.
Video Accessibility Considerations
Videos on a website such as this are highly encouraged, especially if accessibility factors are considered when publishing your Video content. One example would be in providing supplemental transcripts as PDF downloads for each video you present. Making the video script or narration into readable content allows the video’s message to be accessible to users with visual and hearing disabilities, while also providing extra SEO value with the contents of the supplemental file.
Search Functionality
Search functionality is another important factor within your requirements. The content and media on your site need to be found easily regardless of where the content resides and the format it is in. Files, downloads, resources, images, etc. can be equally as important as returning basic page results and should also be considered when setting up search indexing and a filtering priority for multi-format content types.
